Stage 2 Crack Propagation

Stage 2 crack characterized by striations (Brown, M.W. and Miller K.J.)

A stage 2 crack occurs when the combination of cyclic stresses and the crack length exceed the KI value. The stage 2 cracks in many metals are characterized by the striations formed on the fracture surface by apllied cyclic stress. The number of striations on the surface is proportional to the crack growth per stress cycle.
